BioBlitz at Cocohill Forest with Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway (CPAG)

Members of the Barbados Chapter participated in a BioBlitz at Cocohill Forest, St. Joseph which was hosted by Caribbean Protected Areas Gateway (CPAG) on March 25th 2023. A Bioblitz is an event where persons take pictures/observations to help identify plants and animals within specified areas, in this instance, the specified area was Cocohill Forest. CYEN members were citizen scientists for 2 hours taking pictures of the flora and fauna seen in the forest while also enjoying the views of Barbados and the banter amongst members. Animals and insects such as the millipede, giant African snails and ants were seen along with plants such as the MacCaw Palm, almond trees, bamboo trees and lemongrass.

Beach Cleanup Collaboration with the Faculty of Science & Technology

On March 19th, 2023 CYEN collaborated with the Faculty of Science & Technology (FST) Student Committee to execute a beach cleanup at Long Beach, Christ Church. The cleanup was to commemorate the start of their FST Student Committee Week. In preparation for the cleanup, CYEN members did a training session on 17th March for persons who would have served as data collectors on the day of the cleanup. On the day of the cleanup, there were 46 volunteers present who collected a total of 225.33lbs of marine debris including fishing nets and microplastics and cleared a distance of 0.60km.

Agrofest 2023 – Barbados

The CYEN Chapter in Barbados had an exhibition at Agrofest 2023 from February 24th- 26th. CYEN primarily uses this event to gather data, raise funds and raise awareness. This year’s exhibition was focused on raising awareness about the SOILCARE programme, the UN Sustainable Development Goals especially goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land) and the importance of soil. In addition, data was collected from Barbadian youth on soils.

“Walk Fuh Yuh Future” 5K Climate Justice Walk Recap

On January 15th, 2023 CYEN in Barbados hosted its Climate Justice 5K Walk-Run entitled “Walk Fuh Yuh Future.” The opening remarks were given by the National Coordinator, Ms. Shannon Weekes while the featured address was made by the Honorable Colin. E. Jordan- The Minister of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector. The event was attended by 100+ participants and 80 volunteers. Some of the participants included Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Barbados, Mr. Ciro Ciliberto, staff from Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited and PwC East Caribbean as well as students of the Harrison College Environmental Club. CYEN expresses its heartfelt gratitude to its sponsors Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited and PwC East Caribbean, companies and persons who donated to the event, the participants and the volunteers. Without your support, the event would not have been a success.

The Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) is conducting a Pre-ClimaKon Survey as part of our Caribbean Youth for Climate Action Convention entitled “CLIMAKON.” ClimaKon will provide the opportunity for youth within the Caribbean to gather under the banner of “Climate Action”. This event also seeks to get youth across the Caribbean to speak and give their views more freely on Climate Change and its related issues. The purpose of this survey is to gain the knowledge of Barbadian youth on Climate Change and its related areas. All collected information will be used to inform and steer discussions at the upcoming CLIMAKON Youth Convention. By completing this survey, you will be given an opportunity to win a grand prize after the survey period has closed. *This Survey is only open to Residents, Students (minimum of 1 year in the country) and Citizens of Barbados (Ages 15 – 30)
